I bought my litre petrol Jeep new three years ago. Going in, I knew it would be a thirsty vehicle given its out-dated 4 speed auto tranny and almost 2 tonnes of weight. I also knew the diesel version would be cheaper on fuel, but given the excellent run out pricing I got on the petrol version, it was hard to justify paying over $6,000 more for the diesel. I thought to myself "spend $6,000 more up front now, or pay it in instalments via extra fill-ups over the life of the vehicle?" I chose the latter. $6,000 would buy me around 70 full tanks...Read more of petrol, and also considering service costs on petrol engines are generally lower than diesels, the break even point would come a very long way down the track. My reasons for buying the Cherokee were the great purchase price, its looks, its high level of features, and its cargo space. The fact that it was a real 4x4 (with low range) that also was comfortable and behaved quite well on the road helped seal the deal. Of course I wished it had the more powerful and efficient Pentastar engine and 6 speed automatic that the Grand Cherokee had, but this car was $14,000 cheaper than one of those! You can't have everything. In use over the last three years (and 50,000kms) the Jeep has been ultra reliable. Not a single thing has gone wrong with it. I've driven between capital cities, taken it on the beach, done some light off-roading, commuted in the city daily, towed trailers, and filled it with band equipment regularly. Its fuel consumption routinely falls between and 15 Lt/100kms around town, and returns about 12 on longer trips. I have found that oil viscosity affects the fuel consumption. The manual calls for the use of a thin 5w20 weight oil. Make sure you do use a 5w oil as putting in a 10w30 (as the Jeep dealer did) adds at least and extra 1Lt/100kms to its already healthy appetite. The engine/tranny is the weak link in an otherwise great package. Climbing hills, overtaking at speed, and towing all show up that the engine is somewhat underpowered, and when the 4 speed tranny kicks down under load, it ain't subtle! Again, I was expecting this and it was a trade-off I made mentally against the highly competitive purchase price. The 20 inch rims on my Jet model are not suited to any serious off-roading, but I've found they worked just fine on the beach and the muddy trails I have taken the Jeep on. The tyres have held up well and will need changing at around 60,000kms.
While they were in there I went ahead and told them to replace the PCV valve. Apparently the PCV valve part number that came up (68083202AC) for the car didn't match what was in there. The new part had 2 screw holes vs 3 screw holes in the original. They said the hose fitting seemed different as well. The dealer did not feel comfortable using

I got done and started driving with it still on eco and it was turning on and off. I had it at the dealer to get a new key and asked him what it was.. "yeah that's the MDS".. ok? So I proceeded to ask him how it works.. "yeah, it drops the cylinders down to 3 instead of 6".... OK?? NOWHERE in ANY of my jeep information including the build sheet does it talk about MDS.. Even a google search just shows up that its available with the Hemi in the grands. So what the heck?!! _________________2010 Liberty Sport Silver02 Liberty Ltd. "I recently took my Jeep Cherokee to the dealer for its safety recall and, after the inspection, a cross-car beam had to be fitted. To do this Jeep have removed the towbar and told me that the vehicle cannot be fitted with it anymore (they have not be able to source one to fit yet). I find this unacceptable as I specifically bought the car to tow things. I’ve contacted Jeep customer services, but they’re not interested. What are my options?" Absolutely. If the Jeep dealer fitted the towbar then the Jeep dealer is liable to either repair your car and fit another towbar so that it can tow or buy your car from you because it has been rendered unsuitable for the purpose for which you bought it. As part of the recall in the USA, Cherokees fitted with the modified protective crossbar were also retrofitted with MOPAR towbars free of charge. You and anyone else with the same problem can legally compel either the dealer who sold you the car or Chrysler UK to make the car safe and also make it capable of towing. My Jeep Cherokee's sat nav permanently thinks it's off-road. Any help? "I have a 2007 Jeep Cherokee fitted with a RB3 satnav and it permanently says OFF-ROAD. The only verbal instruction I get is a voice saying follow the on-screen arrow....then no more voice. To follow the arrow would send me around in circles as it is so inaccurate. The off-road thing is new to me, just suddenly started. Any help out there please?" I guess you could try the old computer thing of re-booting it. Are there any instructions in the manual? The answer might be to eject the disc/SD card, switch everything off, replace the disc/SD card, then see if it re-boots. Failing that, seek a satnav spacialist. Need a 4x4 for towing a horsebox "We are looking to buy a second car, solely for towing a horsebox. We will only be using it once every two weeks or so for distances of between 10 to 100 miles at a time. We have £5000 to spend and the vehicle must have a braked towing weight of around tonne. We were set on the Jeep Cherokee (2002 - 2007) sport but I have just read the large number of bad things to look out for. Would there be anything else you can recommend in our budget range? " Few automatics can tow this weight. But 3500kg requires a big 4x4, like the Mitsubishi Shogun, Pajero. Trooper. Land Rover Discovery. Toyota Land Cruiser. No Hyundais or KIAs can safely tow 3500kg. Replacement for Jeep Cherokee "I am thinking about replacing my 7 yr old petrol auto Jeep Cherokee. I do 5000 miles a year and don't need full 4x4, but wish to retain a lazy petrol engine and auto box - what would you recommend?" Probably the new Toyota RAV-4 Valvematic Multidrive S, which is 4WD. Honda does a 2WD CR-V auto but it's not really powerful enough. Mazda doesn't do a CX-5 auto. As we know, many if not most models of mass-produced cars built in the first part of this century were available in petrol or diesel flavours. It was all about giving folk a choice. Shed is wondering how much choice there's going to be twenty years time when everything is electric, with no decisions to be made on fuel, aspiration type, number and format of cylinders etc. Will we still be willing to pay huge premiums for big-name cars when they're all going to be pretty much the same under the skin? Will buying decisions boil down to nothing more than the amount of luxury and kit on offer? Will brands become irrelevant? forget all that, looking back not forward is what Shed prefers to do as there's more money in it. With that in mind, and thinking of all the various engine options on offer over the last thirty years which is SOTW's main chronological stomping ground, accidental mis-description of a particular model in an ad can easily this week's shed, which is being advertised as a Jeep Cherokee Sport CRD diesel when it's actually a Cherokee Sport petrol. An innocent mistake, no doubt, although in Shed's experience, getting this sort of thing 'wrong' isn't necessarily a problem. It all depends on what you believe your market might want. If you think that the customers round your way are after fuel economy, accidentally advertising a large-engined petrol-guzzler as a diesel could be a good way of shifting it. All you need is plausible deniability, which is easy enough if you look stupid. Shed has sold quite a few cars in this way to local customers, salving his guilty conscience by a clever plan of full disclosure. He knows that when he starts droning on about bore and stroke, all the ancient prospects in the village will glaze over and then bend over, especially the postmistress, albeit in a less metaphorical most PH types, finding out that a small diesel is actually a big petrol would be seen as a win, so this week's shed could be just the ticket. Sitting in the plump driver's seat with the engine running you'd think it would be hard for even the daftest forecourt operative not to notice the difference between a diesel Cherokee Sport and a petrol one. If they're a bit mutton, the ' on the back and the tacho redline of 6,000rpm should tell them that this was definitely not an American a Jeep petrol out to 6,000rpm would require extreme bravery as well as cloth ears. Our example was banged together in 2001, the first year that the PowerTech V6 was on the Jeep menu alongside the non-Sporty Cherokee's trusty-ish straight six. The new V6 didn't really add a lot of engineering sophistication or, to be blunt, anything much. Technically it wheezed out 208hp at 5,200rpm compared to the Cherokee Limited's lower but more accessible 181hp at 4,600rpm. The V6's 230lb ft torque peak didn't arrive until 3,800rpm, whereas the max torque of 225lb ft came in 800rpm earlier. The 4-speed auto would supposedly grind the through the 0-60 in a grizzled whisker under ten seconds, but Shed doesn't recall anyone ever having the patience or lack of mechanical sympathy to establish its top TD diesel Cherokee of 2001 was quite a bit down on power compared to the Jeep petrols at 141hp, but it had more torque - 253lb ft - and that maximum was delivered at just 2,000rpm. The diesel also had an official combined fuel consumption of over 30mpg, making it a lot more sensible for towcar use than the whose cruising mpg was 20, with 15mpg or less being nearer the mark in town. Luckily the fuel computer readout was on a panel above the screen so you could ignore it and pretend the single-figure numbers on steep hills weren't really happening. Talking of screens, the rear one would pop open on a light pull of the tailgate lever, not so good if you were a Jimmy Hill type and not paying you weren't bothered about fuel costs the V6 was a hardy and useful sort of beast with a tonne towing capacity, a fairly compact footprint, and actually pretty remarkable off-road ability. For an insight into how good it was off road, have a gander at this contemporary vid starring the inimitable Ken Gibson, ex motoring editor of The Ken says, the new Sport of 2001 had rack and pinion steering for the first time (whoo!) and a new chassis. It was actually better than all right when it was new, but the petrol engines were old-school thirsty, there wasn't a lot of room inside, and despite Ken's chassis improvements the steering was too light on the tarmac. The V6 also suffered from valve seat failure, usually as a result of excessive engine heat caused by (among other things) poorly designed piston rings. The valve lash adjusters got stuck too and the PCV valve got clogged, but most of these problems were relatively easy and cheap to fix. A could run up to 200,000 or even 300,000 miles. There again it might start struggling at 75, shed has 115,000 miles to its credit. According to the last MOT in November all four coil springs were corroded. New ones for the back end are generally available for about £45 a go. The fronts are a bit harder to find in the UK. It can be a case of putting an order in and waiting for them to arrive. Other than that the next owner will inherit a non-excessive oil leak from the 'front', which could mean the engine but of course it might also be the diff given that the rear one is the site of another NEOL. All the suspension mounting points were de-rusted and repaired in 2018 at 106,000 miles, so you should be able to put those out of your mind for the foreseeable then what have you got? A Freelander rival with fully switchable AWD, a decent NCAP crash rating, a dod of character and, as Bob the Binman might say, a good old fashioned big-incher under the bonnet. . 473 431 206 174 57 553 710 164
